Mozart in the Middle

This is not a story about birth order. Mozart was the oldest of seven children. One of the crowning achievements of his life was playing second violin and viola parts in the middle of the orchestra. This is the story of a fight he had with his stand partner, the disappearance of that stand partner, and their subsequent reunion. You'll find out how Mozart learned the violin (rather unconventionally), and what kind of tricks he had up his sleeve as a musical boy wonder.

Beauties and Beasts - From Tangos to Tarantulas

Brahms and Saint-Saens had a special place in their hearts for lullabies and swans. The other side of the musical coin contains a whole universe of creatures and pests. Children delight in musical pictures of bumblebees, wild mice, tarantulas, and snakes. There's something for everybody on this program, courtesy of Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Vivaldi.

Cooking With Ludwig

Sometimes it's not easy to decide to take up a musical instrument. Jimmy Wiggle likes music, but he doesn't want to practice because it will take time away from watching wrestling on TV. He gets advice from an unusual but effective source, Ludwig van Beethoven, whose experience as a cook shows Jimmy the importance of trying something new. The mischievous Hot Canary and Kiddin' on the Strings join the music of Beethoven and Mozart. When Ludwig gives advice, it's hard not to listen.

Galileo's Metronome

Artwork by Dominic Hernandez

Rhythm takes center stage in this program of music and science. Galileo's father was an innovative music teacher, and inspired his son with the magic of music. All children are challenged and frustrated by their music lessons, but Galileo never let a problem get the better of him. He turned his difficulties with rhythm into a search for the ultimate metronome. Galileo the inventor explored one of music's many mysteries, the quest for the even beat.

Bach and Buber: Together at Last

There's so much to learn from Johann Sebastian Bach's music. Imagine what it would be like to actually have a lesson with him. Set in present day Southern California, a music school offers an hour of instruction from the world's most famous composer. One particular student turns the hour into an (mis)adventure, a journey fast and furious via the imagination. Music education suffers a setback, but Bach in his infinite patience delivers yet again a great musical experience.

Philharmonic Truck Stop

The dry, wind swept desert is the landscape for our musical tale about a father and son, who travel in a huge black truck from the lavish concert hall in Palm Springs to Los Angeles, carrying one the world's greatest collection of musical instruments. Hear their story as they discover the unusual history of string instruments while eating at the greatest truck stop restaurant this side of Indio. The music of Haydn, Biber, Chopin, Joplin and Brahms will be featured.

The Voyage of the Viola

Mysteries and music are at the heart of this tale about a golden, singing viola and its fantastic journey into another dimension.  Enjoy the music of Brahms, Mendelssohn, Kreisler, and Bach as our search for the missing instrument takes us into the Hall of Mirrors, where you never know what’s around the corner.  It may not be Halloween, but the quirky and charming Tricks and Treats by Markwood Holmes will be performed.

The Ultimate Math and Music Experience

Artwork by Dominic Hernandez

The beauty and logic of music have much in common with math.  At an after-school student “think-tank”, software and a virtual roller coaster create a connection…and a collision, of music and math forces.  We’ll discover one school’s unique approach to student improvement.  The music of Mozart, Kreisler, and Brahms will share the program with gypsy music by Drdla and John Williams’ Harry Potter.  And as an added bonus, there will be some memorable story problems.
