CMA defines chamber music as music for small ensembles, whose members
generally perform one to a part without a conductor.
At the heart of chamber music lies the spirit of collaboration and the role
of the individual performer. Chamber music places the highest order of
responsibility upon the individual to engage in a close musical dialogue with
the other performers in the ensemble without the aid of a conductor. As a
collaborative expression, as in an ideal democracy, chamber music relies upon
the collective musical instincts, experience, knowledge, and talents of its
participants to guide the process of interpreting, rehearsing and performing.
Historically, chamber music has referred to western classical music written
for small ensembles such as the string quartet. Today, however, many different
kinds of musical styles and ensembles thrive in the diverse world that is
chamber music.
Chamber Music Express provides school concerts and library concerts
and offers a large selection of programs.

The Hot Canary. The stories include Vivaldi at the Village, Cooking with

Programs
Beauties and Beasts - From Tangos to Tarantulas
Brahms and Saint-Saens had a special place in their hearts for lullabies and swans. The other
side of the musical coin contains a whole universe of creatures and pests. Children delight in
musical pictures of bumblebees, wild mice, tarantulas, and snakes. There's something for
everybody on this program, courtesy of Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Vivaldi.
Cooking With Ludwig
Sometimes it's not easy to decide to take up a musical instrument. Jimmy Wiggle likes music,
but he doesn't want to practice because it will take time away from watching wrestling on TV.
He gets advice from an unusual but effective source, Ludwig van Beethoven, whose experience
as a cook shows Jimmy the importance of trying something new. The mischievous Hot Canary
and Kiddin' on the Strings join the music of Beethoven and Mozart. When Ludwig gives advice,
it's hard not to listen.

Rhythm takes center stage in this program of music and science. Galileo's father was an
innovative music teacher, and inspired his son with the magic of music. All children are
challenged and frustrated by their music lessons, but Galileo never let a problem get the better of
him. He turned his difficulties with rhythm into a search for the ultimate metronome. Galileo
the inventor explored one of music's many mysteries, the quest for the even beat.

There's so much to learn from Johann Sebastian Bach's music. Imagine what it would be like to
actually have a lesson with him. Set in present day Southern California, a music school offers an
hour of instruction from the world's most famous composer. One particular student turns the
hour into an (mis)adventure, a journey fast and furious via the imagination. Music education
suffers a setback, but Bach in his infinite patience delivers yet again a great musical experience.
